Not Necessarily The Voice??? For many years, people have come to me and said, “You’re a natural for voiceovers in Toronto because of that deep voice you have.”

Not necessarily. If I’m a “natural” narrator and announcer, its only because I’ve spent years using and practicing my craft and delivery, not so much beacuse of my actual voice. This is something most people miss. Think about it. A person could have a nice deep voice, but if they do a voice over sounding like a robot, droning on with no inflection an sounding like their just reading a menu, then they sound terrible. They suck at being a Toronto voice talent.

For example, take a listen the next time ads play on TV or on radio. The Toronto announcers voicing these spots are all over the map ... some have a deep voice, some medium, and others are high-pitched. There’s a voice gig out there for just about every type of production. What gets you the job is whether you can deliver it in the way your Toronto-based client wants.

Practice your voice-over delivery every chance you get. Choose a few commercials, watch or listen and try to absorb the voice talent’s pacing and inflection, rather than just the sound of their particular voice. And, when you’re reading billboards, magazines or books, read it out loud to yourself in "voice-over" mode. That’s a great way to practice and soon enough, you’ll be doing that without even knowing ... although, those around you might start thinking you’re nuts, but who cares?
